CHALLENGE ROUNDS ABOLISHED. PAKIS, March 18. (Recoieed March 20, at 11 a.m.) The Congress of tho International Lawn Tennis Federation adopted a resolution abolishing the system of challenge rounds in tho world's championship. DAVIS CUP. A New York cable states that Great Britain, having drawn a bye in the preliminary round, will meet fc!v» winner of the Japan-Italy match. Denmark, also a bye, will meet tho winner of the FranceCanada match. TEAM FOR NEW SOUTH WALES. K. L. Bartlaet, of Auckland, will be unable to go to Now South Wales with, the New Zealand lawn tennis team, and T. G. Greenwood, of Ch.ristch.urch, will fill the vacancy, taking the position of eixth man in the team. Mr M. E. Deriniston, chairman of the Lawn Tennis Association, has been chosen as manager of tho team, and Mr P. 0. Peacock captain of the men's team. Miss Marjorio Macfarlano will lead the ladies' team. OTAGO v. SOUTH OTAGO. A team from South Otago met an Otago team at Anderson Bay on Saturday. This was the first occasion on. which a. South Otago team has visited the city, and it is matter for regret that tho heavy shower which fell about 1 p.m. caused an abandonment of play. At that stage Otago had a substantial lead, as tho subjoined scores show (names of Otago players mentioned first):

Men's Doubles. —Jensen and Wilkinson beat Mirams and 11. C. Moore, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 j Maimsoll and Slater beat M'An ley and M'Caw, 4-6, 7-5, 8-6; Mansoa and Edmond beat E. Moore and Ross, 6-4. 6-4. Ladies' Doubles.—Misses Pattison and Alexander beat Misses Gillanders and Walker, 9-1; Misses M'Adam and Duthia beat Miss Malcolm and Mrs Lewis, 9-4; Misses Barclay and Dewar heat Misses Nicholls and Alexander, 9-1. Ladies' Singles.—Miss Pattison beat Miss Gillanders, 9-3; Miss Alexander lost to Miss Malcolm, 6-9; Miss Barclay beat Miss Walker, ,9-5; Miss M'Adam beat Mrs Lewis, 9-6. Otago, 9 matches, 12 sets, 108 games; South Otago, 1 match, 3 sets, 69 games. There is every chance of a town team visiting Balclutlia next Saturday.

JUNIOR TOURNAMENT. The fourth annual tournament of the Junior Lawn Tennis Association was commenced on Saturday morning on the Otago, Cosy Dell, and Girls' High School Courts, plav being restricted to the Girls' Handicap Doubles. Eighty-six girls entered for this event, and the arrangements made were so satisfactory that at all the courts the first three rounds were completed, and two of the games of the fourth round were also played. At the Cosy Dell Courts the girls reaching the fourth round we.ro M. M'Leod and M. M'Arthur, D. Horre-11 and D. Manchester, and E. King and E. Scott, all of Colnmba College. At the Otago Courts the girls reaching the fourth round were M. Herbert and D. Hart (of St. Hilda's College) and N. Fleming and M. Farquharson (of Archerficld College). At the Girls' High School Courts the girls reaching the fourth round were B. Edie and K. Benzoni (of the Girls' High School), D., and W. Grant (of Coiumba College], and H. Fenwick and M. Macassey (of St. Hilda's College). The handicaps ranged from owo 5 to receive 20, and in the top half of the draw the girls receiving the least handicap have won through; hut in the lower half of the draw, with the exception of the first pair from the Girls' High School, the girls remaining in the event have good handicaps, and represent the new generation of tennis plavcrs, who are being taught the "ame from their first year at school. The two little, girls from Archerfield, who, playing from receive 20, won their games —4O-34, 40-31, and 4-0-32, are only eleven and twelve years old, and one of the little girls from St. Hilda's who reached the fourth round from the receive 16 mark, with her partner winning the sets, 40-30, 40-20, and 41-39, is equally young, and all four of the girls are very promising players. Of the senior girls, M. Herbert and D. Hart, playing from owe 4, won their seta, 40-32, 40-22, and 40-31, and D. Horrell and D. Manchester, playing from owe 2, won their sets, 40-28, 40-29, and 40-23. The event will be concluded next Saturday, and a start will also bo mads with the senior and junior championship events and the Handicap Singles.
