RELIEF EXECUTIVE

ASSISTANCE SUSPENDED,

A meeting of the Relief Executive was held this morning, the mayor (Mr J. S. Douglas) presiding. Corresp mctenco was received from the Labor Department regarding the recovery of railway fares from a labor agent in Gove who advertised for harvesters in the Dunedin papers, with the result that the Relief Executive sent eight men to Gore. They re tunic 1 and said there was no work in that district offering. —It was deeded to make application to the Lab. r Department for the ncoviny of the return faros. Several Lite s we e received from tho various county councils stating that there was no work < ffering in the country. The financial statement of tho executive showed cash in hand £417 17s lOd. The Chairman reverted that £4OO had been received from the benefit trotting meeting up to date, and more was coming in. Several accounts wore passed for payment, leaving, a balance of £sll Is 6d. The Rev. Bryan King said that there was still need for assistance. The winter wafi coming on, and times would be hard. ITo was of opinion that relief should bo stopped in the meantime, and only very needful cases attended to. —It was decided that official relief be stopped and the office closed, in order to build up a fund for the coming winter, and that tho public be appealed to for subscriptions. The Rev. Bryan King said that several of the mini to whom tho executive nad paid railway fares had returned' the money. This action was much appreciated by the executive, and lie hoped the practice would be con tin ned. The Chaiiman, at the conclusion of the meeting, said that be loro they closed ho would like to pay tribute to tho assistance and loyal support given-by the executive members. He personally much appreciated the time they had given to the work and their help. Miss Rnncirann and the Rev. Bryan King, he said, had done particularly goad work. Mr J. B. Waters said that, on behalf of tho citizens, he much appreciated the work of His Whuship the Mivoi. Tho city was fortunate in having such an energetic and eapa-blo man as mayor.
