HIGH SCHOOLS’ GOVERNORS

The following completes our report of the business dealt with at yesterday’s meeting of the Board of Governors of the Otago Boys and Girls’ High Schools

In speaking with regard to the examination results, as outlined in the rector’s report, Professor Thompson said that this year there were eight or nine pupils at least in tho Sixth Form showing a recovery over tho previous years. It would be disastrous, ho thought, if their secondary school education were to end its highest stage at the Fifth Form. In connection with the matriculation examination he pointed out that, the school percentage of passes was greatly above the average, being 73 per cent., whereas the actual number who obtained a pass in tho Dominion as a whole was only one-third of the total number who sat for the examination.

A long discussion then took in regard to the standard at which medical students should be permitted to leave the secondary schools before entering the Medical School.

Th report was received. The resignation of Bliss E. D. -Blackie, commercial mistress, Girls’ High School, was accepted with regret. The lady principal requested the -temporary assistance of a home science student for tho home science classes for the first term, at a fee of £lO for the term. — Approved. Blessrs H. Webb and T. K. Sidey, M.P., were appointed the board’s representatives at a conference requested by the Dunedin branch of the League of Nations. The conference will bo held on Monday week between tho League Committee and local educational bodies.
