RUGBY FOOTBALL

UNION CLUB.

The fifty-first animal meeting of the Union Football Club was held m the Oddfellows’ Hall, Albany street, last night, I'Jr H. II S. White (vice-president)otcupy-inv the chair in the temporary absence or 3 Mr J. Hope (president). There was a hircre attendance of members. Before proceeding to the business, the meeting stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Mr 1). Mong, a former old member and captain of the second fifteen. _ . In moving’ iho adoption of tiic report and balance-sheet the Chairman expressed pleasure at seeing so many present. After fifty years it was very creditable to see the club in the position, which it now occupied. This was clue to the enthusiastic support of both past and 1 present members, and Mr While hoped that they would have the support of more old members in the coming season. A little more activity on the part of the old members, and the club would be brought to the position which it held in former years. The Union Club had played the game keenly and with good spirit. Mr While paid a tribute to the work of the secretary and the committee. The 0.8.F.U. was criticised by a great number of players and by the public, but that body did its best in the interest of the sport. In a few years’ time the clubs and players reap the benefit of the Rugby Union’s work. The Dunedin public was loyal in its support to athletics, and tno O.R.h.U. had shared largely in this support. The old members of the duo and tne public agreed that the Union men played with the best of spirit. Ho hoped that the members would continue to support the club, and not become disheartened because it was not in as good a position as it might be. .. , , Mr H. Harris (vice-president), in seconding the motion, said that last season had been a difficult one for the 0.R.F.U., and that this season would probably be the same. The Union Club had four fifteens in the field last year, and ho would like to sec a fifth grade team this season, as it was from the young players that the

club recruited its seniors. The report was adopted. Mr White then vacated the chair in favor of Mr Hope. Mr George Freeman was elected a hie member of the club in recognition of his valuable services in the past. The Secretary of the Linwood Football Club wrote inviting the Union Club to play a match at Christchurch at Easier. ■ The Secretary was instructed to write to the LimvoodT Club expressing regret that the Union team would not bo able to make the visit to Christchurch this season.— Mr White suggested that tho Union Club play an Otago Central team in place of the trip to Christchurch, and he expressed confidence that part of the expenses would bo borne by old members. The election of officers resulted as fol-lows-.—Patron, Sir Robert Stout; president, Mr J. Hope; vice-presidents—Messrs H. H. S. White, D. M. Munro, Dr Fitzgerald, 11. Harris, C. S. Jenkins, 0. The annual meeting of -tho Dunedin Club, which was held in the Stock Exchange last evening, was well attended. The president (Mr St. J. J. Dunne) occupied the chair. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, tho Chairman congratulated the dub on its strength and solidity during the fiftieth year ,of its existence. He had been at every meeting for sixteen years, and the present outlook was tho best ho had over seen. The social part of the club’s life had not been neglected during the* year. It was not fair to tho coach that tho teams were not more regular in attending practices. If a team were to bo properly coached it must train as a team. They had a real good coach last year, but he had not been given full opportunity to train tho teams. Ho had given a great deal of attention to the juniors, with .gratifying results. In conclusion, tho president said that they would probably have a visit this year from the Sydenham (Christchurch) team. Tho motion was seconded by Mr R. D. Isaacs, and carried. Office-bearers wer elected as follow Patron, Mr S. Solomon, K.C.; president and life member, Mr St. J. J. Dunne; vice-presidents—Messrs R. D, Isaacs, C. Bond", J.
