OBITUARY

Mr Duncan William M ‘Arthur, a wellknown civil engineer, died at Auckland on Monday, in his seventy-second year. Born at Oban, Argyllshire, Scotland, a son of the lata Duncan M‘Arthur, for many years chief magistrate of Oban, he came to New Zealand with his parente when eleven years of age. They first went to Dunedin, bnt afterwards settled in Invercargill, where the late Mr M‘Arthur was educated and passed his examination as surveyor. He also gained his diploma as public works engineer under the late William Blair, of the Public Works Department in Dunedin. His first appointment was with Brogdcn and Sons, who constructed lengths of Now Zealand railways, Mr M ‘Arthur being stationed on the section between Dunedin and Invercargill. Subsequently ho was Resident Government Engineer for Westland, with headquarters at Greymouth. Returning to Invercargill, he engaged in business as civil engineer in conjunction with his brother (the late J. D. M‘Arthur). He again went toMho West Const, and for seven years was engineer to tho Humphreys Gully Alluvial Gold Mining Company, residing at Hokitika on account of his wife’s health. Ho then wont to Australia, and, was borough engineer and town clerk at Horsham. Victoria. Returning to New Zealand, ho became engineer to Ohinemuri County, and afterwards borough engineer at Waihi, filling the latter post for ten years. Of late years ho had been in private practice in Auckland.

The death occurred at Wellington .on Saturday of Mr B. A. He ami, a resident of over forty years’ standing. Tho deceased once had a store at WftM Batin
