TECHNICAL SCHOOL MANAGERS

Mr T. Scott presided over the monthly meeting of the Board of Managaraent of the King Edward Technical College, held yesterday afternoon. There were also present Messrs Wallace, Haymes, Larnach, White, Douglas, Clark, and Steele, Miss Runciman, and Mrs Gumming.

The Chairman referred to the death of Mr Robert Breen in very sympathetic terms.

The Appointments Committee recommended that Frederick J. Gair, 8.A., bo appointed additional male assistant, and that Miss Edith Homan bo appointed to the position vacated by Miss Naylor. In order, however, to admit of the rearrangement of the stall next year, if necessary, the appointment was in the meantime regarded as for one year only.—The recommendation was adopted. DIRECTOR’S REPORT. The Director reported that the enrolment for the Technical High School was now 209 girls and 223 boys, making a total of 432, with 400 in attendance on the corresponding date last year. In order to allow several masters free for evening work, the number of male teachers required to be increased, and the approval of the department to the appointment of an additional assistant had been sought. The evening classes had opened this week with a very good attendance of pupils. It was feared, however, that compliance with the circular memorandum recently issued by the department stipulating a minimum number of students in order to ensure official recognition of a class would necessitate the closing of several classes. Where there were circumstances that might bo considered exceptional special application had been made to the department. Ho requested that, in the event of the department declining to grant concessions, he be authorised to make any other arrangements deemed 1 suitable andsatisfactory during the financial stress.— The report was adopted. , CALLANDER SCHOLARSHIPS. The Director recommended that the awards of the Callander Scholarships for 1922 bo as follows:—Domestic science— Mabel Dickison, Doris Gubbins, Roma Knight, Elsie Ellis, Eileen Clark, Annie Shirley, Eileen Hastie, and Roma Prattley (a hq-lf scholarship forfeited by a student in 1921); carpentry—John Holden, George W. Robb, William P. Rough; plumbing— David A, Douglas and George T, Wilden; engineering—Stnrz Barltrop, Stewart A. Mackay, Frederick M'Cluskoy, and George R. Thorn.—Hie recommendations were adopted. ■ ■ ' . ' , '. ‘
