EDUCATION BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board was commenced this morning, those- present being Messrs J. Wallace (chairman), G. Livingstone, J. Smith, R. H. Todd, J. H. Wilkinson, W. K. Brugh, and the Hon. D. T. Flemmg. The Education Department intimated that an additional grant of £393 had been approved in respect of the cost of the infant department at Anderson Bay.—Received with thanks, the Chairman stating that this was the amount the board asked for. The department notified its approval of the appointment of an additional assistant lecturer at the Dunedin Training College, and of tho attendance of Training College .students at tho University for "C" English for tho first term, on condition that the now lecturer was not also paid meanwhile—Received. Tho Education Department intimated that, from consideration of economy, it had been decided that no classes in swimming and life-saving would be recognised for the 1922-23 season—Mr Brugh referred to three or four cases lately in which people would not have been drowned had they been able to swim a few strokes.—Mr Wilkinson said they should strongly oppose any economy in this direction.—lt was decided to hold the matter over till to-morrow, when a motion will be brought forward protesting against the department's decision. The Education Department intimated that the next examinations for teachers' certificates wouM be held on Monday, August 20, and following days, instead of in the month of January, as formerly.—The Chairman said the board would require to make arrangements to Rive its teachers leave to attend tho examinations. January bad been a most inconvenient month for the examinations, and August would be found much more satisfactory. * Tho architect submitted a lengthy list of recommendations for repairs and improvements to schools and snhool dwellings throughout the district, and most of these were ' approved.
