Guthrie, Acting Minister of Railways: Willi reference to your rcproscnlallous regarding the petition of residents of tho J.nko district for the continuation of a daily service between Dunedin audi Queenstown, and tho roin-tatement of the weekend excursions, I have the honor to inform you that for many, years the Railway Department has annually experimented in the hope of building up a traffic, but without success. Tho trains do not pny their way, neither docs tho lake steamer service. The traffic to Queeustovrn does not '.'/arrant tho continuation of a costly daily train service, and in the cireun'.fitaiieo; 1 regret that the request cannot be complied with. Holiday excursion tickets will be issued at Easter, from Tuesday, April 11, until Monday, Aprii 17, idem, and will be available for return any time up to «nd including Thursday, May 18: but nothing beyond this is justifiable.
