CAMPAIGN BY EXTREMISTS. GOVERNMENT’S REPRESSIVE MEASURES. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. ’ DELHI, December 20. (Received December 22, at 8.50 a.m.) Action is being taken everywhere against the extremists, and numerous members -of the prescribed Nationalist volunteer organisation, with their leaders, were arrested on charges of alleged sedition. A majority of the Calcutta University students struck, including those at tho Missionary College. Various vernacular newspapers are being prosecuted for publishing seditious articles, or for inciting people to join tho volunteers. One or two apologised to the Government, including a leading Calcutta extremist newspaper. Everywhere deterrent sentences are being passed. , Regarding Calcutta, the nolo idea appears to be to ensure that tho boycott of the Prince shall bo complete, even to the extent of fastening placards on stray dogs advocating the boycott. Tho Government’s firm attitude is causing a hostile feeling not only among tho extremists, but among certain of tho moderates, and one provincial Government decided to abandon the campaign. It ia generally considered, however, that the Government’s action is justified.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
