About forty miles south of Wanganui some damage bus occurred. ..to the Wan-mmui-Wakamiaka cable, and on Saturday ( 3a vs the Auckland '.Si 4 ar’| the, cable aleamer Iris, belonging to the Pacific Cable Hoard, left Auckland to undertake the work of repairing the cable for the Mew Zealand Government. It is interesting to know that since this cable was laid down in 1880, more than forty years ago, this is tho first time that trouble has occurred calling for actual repairs to the cable. Seeing that the cable has not been moved for so long a time, it is anticipated that the work may' bo somewhat more difficult than usual, as obstructions on tho sea bed may have been moved across its route. • IMPOSSIBLE. To do his duty was the assessors sole aim, but the farmer did not help him much, “How much land have you got there?” asked the official. “ Oh, about twenty acres,” was tho offhand reply. "Twenty acres!’’ exclaimed the assessor. “Why, there’s more than that in those five fields alone, isn’t there? Suppose you stretch it a little.” “ Look hero,” said the farmer, “ this is a farm, not a rubber plantation.”
