THUNDERING GOOD RUN
REBUKE TO PRODUCERS. - NORTH ISLAND PESSIMISTS. {Special io tub ‘ Stab.’] _ CHRISTCHURCH, October 12. It is time for tho protest of a plain man against tho kind of pessimistic talk that is current in many places of New Zealand at the present time, and that found expression in tho primary producers’ deputation to Mr Massey yesterday. This was tho introductory observation of a well-known. Canterbury citizen who called at the office of the ‘{Star* this morning. “To hear the primary producers talk about New Zealand as if it were halfway over a precipice fs enough to make any decent New Zealander’s blood boil,” he said. “ Tho shcepfarmers and primary producers in general have had a thundering good nra for years past, and any ordinary business sense would have warned them that a slump was bound to come sooner or later. They ought, therefore, to have made provision for it, and they had plenty of opportunity. Hundreds of shcepfarmers that I know did make such provision, and here in Canterbury it is tho rarest thing to come acres a farmer who is not facing the present position with fine courage, and with every hope of an early recovery. But up in tho North Island, where I have been travelling lately, business people and tho primary producers seem to have the ‘wind up’ very badly, and tho atmosphere is especially depressing in Wellington. Wellington lived in an exalted state of prosperity right through the war, because when money was being spent nowhere else it was being lavished in the capital, where all the soldiers were gathered, and all their friends. Naturally Wellington feels now the position much more severely than does any other part of New but Wellington people had such a good time during tho war that they ought to be able to stand six or seven years of drought.”
