PERSONAL

Mr A. J. Foley, secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Choir since its institution a couple of years ago, who has necessarily done a lot of hard work in that time, was shown in a substantial manner on Saturday evening that his services were appreciated. Members and friends bad gathered in tho Overseas Club room after tho football match (Tenors v. Basses), and Mr A. G. Cooke, who was deputed to make a presentation to Mr Foley of a gold watch, said that members wished to acknowledge in a small way their indebtedness to the choir’s honorary secretary. Much of tho choir’s success bad depended upon Mr Foley’s efforts. Messrs W. Paget Gale, A. Martin, P. S. Anderson, C. Murray, and others spoke in a similar strain; and Mr Foley, in a brief, appropriate reply, expressed his thanks. . A Wellington message states that while •walking in tho city yesterday Mr William Tompsitt, aged sixty-three, staggered and fell, and expired almost immediately. For many years he was prominently associated with” local bodies in the Otaki district.

It is unlikely that tho Hon. G. J. Anderson, Minister of Labor and (Mines, will be sufficiently recovered in health to take his place in the House when Parliament meets in ten days’ time. He has been carrying on (Ministerial duties while in hospital, but it will be necessary for someone else to take charge of tho work when Parliament Is in session. At present tho Hon. W. Downie Stewart is taking tho work connected with Labor which Mr Anderson is unable to. deal with, and the Hon. W. Nosworthy is handling mines matters. It is expected that this arrangement will he continued until Mr- Massey’s return.
