MISSING STEAMER GANASTOTA,

ANXIETY INCREASING.

News to diancl by the last Australian mail stales that tlie French. steamer Saint Joseph called at Norfolk Island on July 10 .searching for tho missing steamer Can as! eta. Acting on cable advice from Noumea, the Administrator instructed tho captain la continue tho search in tho vicin ,ity of Lord Howe Island before proceeding to Sydney. The fact that the Canastota carried 50,000 cases of benzine has increased tho anxiety for the safety of the overdue vessel. Ship masters point out that ben-, zinc is always a more or less dangerous cargo, and that many strange things have happened to vessels loaded with such inflammable, material *. but the fear that (ho worst Ims happened the Canastoha is deepened by the fact that, though fitted with wireless, no message for assistance, has been received from her. A former master of a destroyer operating off the roasl of Ireland during tho war recalled an experience in 1916. Wliilo in the Irish Sea an oil ship was discovered on fire, and the destroyer went to the vessel's assitsance. On arrival at the scene the craw was seen standing on the fore and aft part of the steamer, which was alight amidships. The destroyer wos. however, nimble to go alongside the steamer, which was sunsunded by o, lingo ring of burning oil’ floating on the water. This prevented her crew from reaching tho rescuing dratrover. The men perished on the burning vessels, which was finally blown up by -.m explosion. In less than half an hour there was no trace of wreckage, and the. bodies of the crew could not he found. Had the men on tho destroyed not witnessed the tragedy tho fade of Hip steamer would -probably have remained a mystery. PORT OF SYDNEY FACILITIES. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Hurunni. which left Sydney on July 9 for the United Kingdom, is tho heaviest draught ship to negotiate the harbor.
