MISS SPINNEY’S RECITALS
That Miss Dorothea Spinney is a dramatic artist of unusual ability was recognised on tho occasion of her last visit to New Zealand. but judging from tho Press notices in the north sho has made a marked advance in her profession in tho last live years. Speaking of her performance in Christchurch of ‘Tho Alcestis of Euripides,' ” the ‘Sun’ slated; Clad in_ tho flowing robes of ancient Greece, Miss Spinney was a striking figure. She seemed to embody the spirit, of Hellas. Her rich voice, with its musical cadences, lent splendor to the lines of the poet. There was not a false note to mar the harmony of a truly beautiful performance. Thetc was impelling force in her dedclivery of the scene between Admclus and his father, where the distracted son, with bitter recrimination, disowns his parent. Thera was a magnificent delicacy of touch in the farewell between Admctus and Alcestis, and her work as tho Chorus can only bo described as charming. To have heard Alias Spinney in "Die Alcestis’ is indeed to have spent an evening well.” Miss Spinney will appear in the Burns Hall next week. Her programme will be;—Wednesday, ‘The Alcestis 5 ; Thursday, three short plays (by J. M. Barrie, W. B. Yeats, and Ofiphant Down); Saturday, ‘Hamlet.’
