POSITION OF FIRST GRADE TEAMS.
’VARSITY A v. CITY
Fine weather and a dry ground helped to make the game between the two loading teams —’Varsity and City—fast __ and interesting. ’Varsity won the initial bully, and, taking advantage of a miss-hit by Lcs 1 1 ©'and, Bridgman took the ball into the ciicle, but his shot went wide. ’Varsity won the ensuing_ bully, and Turbi-t’scored within two minutes of the commencement of the game. City now got going, but Macpheraon missed a chance of scoring. City kept up the pressure, and M’Ahan scored an equalising goal. Almost immediately afterwards Slater took the ball up the right wing and sent a timely pass to Turbit, who scored his second goal with a splendid shot, which gave Robinson (the goalkeeper’ no chance. From ‘the following bully Bridgman and Turbit by clever combined play carried the ball up to the circle, and Turbit scored his third goal. Keeping up the pressure, Turbit and Bridgman and Davies put in a pretty passing rush, which ended in Davies scoring 'Varsity’s fourth goal. The game now became fast and exciting, the ball quickly travelling from one end of the ground to the other. City had several promising chances of scoring, which were lost through over-eagerness, Butler and Macpherson being the worst offenders in this respect. The pace, now became very fast, but at half-time the score still stood at ’Varsity 4, City 1. The second spell was very evenly contested. City made strenuous efforts to score. -M’Ahan had a chance, hut his shot went over the crossbar. Cnlder for th© City was playing a great game, but he was not well supported. The ’Varsity forwards put in some very clever combined work, as a result of which Turbit scored again, _ ’Varsity kept up the pressure, but City’s goalkeeper (Robinson) splendidly stopped two very hot shots. City now showed much improvement. They gradually worked tho ball upfiold, and Calder scored a splendid goal. City kept up the pressure, but the defence o’f Ryburn and Aitken was very sound. The game ended with ’Varsity winners by five goals to two.
Mr W. H, Down was the referee. GYMNASTIC v. ’VARSITY B. This game was a walk-over for Gymnastic, tho ’Varsity men evidently feeling the effects of the capping. From the opening bully ’Varsity forwards gave tho Gymnastic backs a hot ten minutes, but good goalkeeping prevented a score. Paul gained possession of tho ball, and after a nice run down the wing netted a good goal from a difficult angle. After this the Gym. forwards, ably supported by the halves, gained tbo ascendancy, and the game from this out was practically in their hands, ending 14-1 in favor of Gymnastic. The goals were’ shot by Paul (6), Taylor (3', M'Lintock (3). Mitchell (2). ’Varsity’s goal was scored by Edginton.
Mr Mitchell was referee. Y.M.C.A. v. TRAINING COLLEGE. This name was played on No. 5 ground, which was in very bad condition. From the bully College got away, and had Y.M.C.A! pressed for a few minutes, when good work by the latter’s backs sent play back into College twenty-five. Midfield * play continued till College forwards broke away, and Matherson scored a lucky goal. After that Y.M.C.A. attacked strongly, but good work by College backs succeeded in netting another goal. From the bully off in the second spell Y.M.C.A. forwards by good combination had College backs beaten, and Andrews registered Y.M.C.A.’s first goal. Y.M.C.A. then kept the offensive, and a good rush by Clapshaw resulted in Y.M.C.A. scoring again. For the remainder of the game the play was mostly in College twenty-five, but Y.M.C.A. were unsuccessful in scoring. For College, Fleet and Matherson played well, and for Y.M.C.A. Clapshaw, Young, and Andrews were prominent. The game was ably controlled by Mr Hinton.
