UNLOADING DEVICES

ANOTHER WATERSIDE DISPUTE

Trouble developed at Wellington, yesterday in connection with the unloading of the barque Ilona, which had a narrow escape when she ran on the Pinnacle Rocks while entering the harbor last Sunday week, and which was subsequently removed to Miramar, where her coal cargo was to be discharged. The dispute which has now arisen concerns the use of the Burton block, an unloading device which has figured in wharf disputes for a long lime. The men engaged had ceased work when Mr W. H. G. Bennett, manacrer of the Co-operative Employment Association, Mr T. Glover (president), and Mr J. Laurenson (acting secretary of the Waterside Workers’ Union) went out to Miramar in order to investigate the grievance. It is understood that the men have agreed to work the Ilona under protest, as the vessel has to go on the slip on a certain date.
