Y.M.C.A. CIRCUS

A GREAT SUCCESS. A. novel entertainment was offered by members of the Young Men’s Christian Association in the association’s fine gymnasium last evening. It was billed as a fancy dross carnival and circus, and a long programme was carried out by the classes under the control of the physical department. The house numbered probably 500, and very few took their leave before the performance concluded. The entertainment commenced wiili a selection by the Y.M.C.A. Orchestra, which rendered typical circus music. Then followed a parade of over 150 performers, all gaily costumed, and representing Maoris, clowns, hayseeds, racers,_ scouts, costers, and many others, while still others ’were apparelled in tho dress of the opposite sox. A Dutch choir, led by Mr B. Pinfold, rendered successful items, and Mr J. Gilchrist offered his good ventriloquist turn. Professors Noall and Wiseman gave a clover skit in tho form of a lecture on phrenology. A pleasing item was contributed by the senior ladies’ class —an exhibition of fancy chib swinging. The Plexo Pointers then furnished a display of comedy boxing, which received rounds of applause. The Skalding Skeczer Troupe followed —an exhibition of tumbling stunts and a hurricane basketball match, boys versus gilds, went off quite well. Mr Hudson offered a clever comedy turn. The wheel parade proved very successful. Wheels, trollies, scooters, carpet sweepers, lawn mowers, _ hoops, motor tyros, in fact, almost anything that -would roll, were taken round by the participants. Other boys gave a mock Olympic game contest, in which the pole vault was over a ping pong net. Tho Pons-Winnccke troupe stunted well on tho horizontal bar. The best turn was a Maori haka prepared by a number of residents. Messrs Crewes and Pike led the haka, which went off with such success that those taking part were recalled for another. Many other items were offered, and tho whole show, under an efficient committee, ran smoothly. Mr W. Simpson controlled the spotlight, and Mr J. V. Hanna was ringmaster. Tho show will bo repeated this evening.
