(Received June 24, at 9.35 a.m.) ■*i The Commerce Department has listed ■ ‘ twenty ships as missing during the last six months, including the British tankers Ottawa and Gymeric and the British schooner General Horne Tiro other vessels include those flying the American, Italian, Japanese, Danish, Russian, Spanish, Norwegian, French, and Brazilian flags.— A. and N.Z. Juno 22. k (Received Jane 24, at 9.55 a.m.) The piracy theory has been strengthened ;V>y the State Department’s statement concerning'the American schooner • Carol A. JDeering, which was found oil North Carolina in such a condition that foul play was suspected. Tho crow were missing. On .April 11 a bottle was picked up off Cape : Hatteras with a message reading; “Peering been captured by oil-burning boat, something like chaser.” When the Carol A. Dccring was discovered all the provisions, clothing, and supplies had been removed, anil the lifeboats were missing. Tho State Department believes thatpthcr .vessels may have met a similar fate. The mystery is causing a sensation in shipping circles. Lloyds is Joining in the Investigation.—A. and N.Z. Cable. V A DESERTED SHIP. NEW YORK, Juno 22. In connection with tho schooner Carol Deering, which recently drifted ashore, the only living thing aboard was a parrot, alongside which was a bottle containing a "message stating that the schooner had been captured by an oil-burner resembling a chaser, which took off everything after handcuffing the crew. The message added that there was no chance of escape, and asked the 'finder to notify the William , Deering’s owners.—A. and N.Z. Cable. VARIOUS THEORIES. • 1 NEW YORK, Juno 22. One theory is that the missing ships were captured by rum-runners in order to conduct an illegal trade from Cuban ports, which are carrying on a tremendous business in rum. —•Reuter. The officials advance the theory that one or more of the missing ships may purposely have disappeared with tho object of engaging in gun-running to Ireland. The disappearances have extended over nine months. The British Admiralty and the French Ministry of Marine have been asked to assist in a search for the missing vessels.— Beuter.
