ST. CLAIR GROYNES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—l am accused of being very Knot in mv condemnation of those responsible for t'lie St. Clair Beach muddle. Well, why should we. the taxpayers, not he blunt when our money is needlessly wasted by incompetence? W’bat would wo do with a general in (he army if ho led us to defeat instead of victory? He would havo a vory short shrift ; and, in my opinion, we, the taxpayers, would lie very much better olf if wo applied this method to public works engineers and boards who have the spending of public moneys, by demanding the success of the schemes they propose, or, on the other hand, if their scheme is a failure, their resignation. In my opinion there is too much inclination among public works engineers and others to experiment with the people’s money, and thereby gain knowledge for themselves, irrespective of the consequences; in oilier words, they would like their scheme to be a success, but do not give a continental if it is a failure. Therefore I think that engineers should be hold responsible for the success of the scheme they propose. This would make for efficiency, and stop unnecessary waste of the people’s money. 1 understand that the St. Clair groynes have cost already over £2,000. and" what have wo got for it? We might have well have dumped it into the sea for a start; and it will cost thousands more if we allow it to go on.— l am, etc., R, Bruce. March 5.
