The weather was showery in the morning for the annua! race meeting of the Clifdon Racing Club, but this probably helped to swell the attendance, which was exceptionally good for such an out-of-the-way place, and the gate receipts amounted to i 24 18s 6d, an increase of about £8 on last year. The committee had improved the surface of the course since last year, but the rain made some of the tondressing a little soft, and in places the going was treacherous. The racing wa? fairly interesting, and two big dividends were returned, which probably cost the club something in the way of turnover Investments totalled £6,465, as against £3,880 last year, and, though stakes were considerably increased, tho meeting should show a profit. The starling was done by Mr Carnegie Gardner, and for an amateur he was quite successful after the first race. Mr W Norman gave him valuable assistance at times. The management of the meeting was good, and, though somewhat late in sterling, the tune was made up before the last race started. The committee was most hospitable in its treatment of visitors, and, taken, a!i over, the gathering was a very pleasant or’ing. Racing commenced with the Lilburn Handicap, 6f, for madien horses, and on his good Wairio showing Soldier’s Pride, with a 51b allowance, was made a hot oddson chance. He did not get a good start, and did not appear to handle the going well. Tho winner was found in 5 Blazing Light (Gay Spark—Kulnine mare; S. [ Gibb), who was always well placed, and beat 4 Glcnlnipai home two lengths, 2 Ballerina a head away third. 3 Markilla shot out at the start, and led for three furlongs, but was then well beaten. Time, Imin 20sec. Investments. £520. The Oravvia Steeplechase. 2m, for horses that had not won at a totalisator meeting, was voted a great thing for Miss Trixie,; but her rider let her baulk at the stand double, when she had a commanding lead, and this let 4 Sky Rocket (Rosemere— | Heartwood, F Langford) take charge, a position he held to the finish, and won by a dozen lengths from Miss Trixie, who heat 6 Lovena over the last half furlong. All the others fell. Time, 4mln 50|sec. Investments. £447. Hylas was made a hot favorite in the Tuatapere Saddle Trot, Ij-m, but he found a tough nut to crack in the straight-out trotter 9 Lady Wild (Wildmoor —Lady Rothschild, Gib. M'Lean). The latter went well throughout, and won by three lengths from the favorite, with the scratch horse, 5 Oaknut, half a length away third. 4 Greenstripe, who led for over a mile and a-quarter, was fourth, half a length behind Oaknut. Times, 3min 481 sec, 3min 53?seo, 3min 41sec. Investments, £836. Mettle Drift, who has been on the easy list since the Otautau Meeting, was made a slightly better favorite than Sartolife (Sarto —Rubelite. S. Gibb, carried 8.11) in the Clifden Cup, l|m, which was a very even betting race. 3 Kokowai led for a mile, and then Sartolitc moved up to her. and in the run home won easily bv a couple of lengths from Kokowai, with Mattie Drift a similar distance away. The onlv other starter, Flag Lieutenant, was never near the leaders. Time, 2min 14? see. Investments, £6Bl.

The form shown by Lady Links at tho Tananui Meeting sent her out favorite in the Waiau H,ck Race, of, but 2 Linton (Blackstone —Eileen Gipsy, O. Voight, 7.11! caught her in the last hundred yards, and won by a length, the other two starters a long way back. Time, Imin 4|rac. Investments. £669. The Alton Saddle Trot, 2m, saw Country Queen, by Sir Hector (J. Welsh), sent out an odds-on favorite, and catching 4 Quick March and 8 Guy Wild, who led for over a mile and a-half, won easily by five lengths. Quick March beating Guy W ild over a length for second money, and old Bushranger (5), a length away, fourth. 2 Oaknut fell at the end of a mile. Times; smin s|sec, smin 12tseo, smin lojlsec. Investments, £919. The Belmont Hack Race, 7f, was only an exercise canter for Sartolite (S. Gibb, 9.3', who was sent out nearly a 2 to 1 on chance, and beat 2 Lady Links by five lengths, with the only other starter, 3 Glenhupai, three lenghts away. Time, Imin 32?scc. Investments. £523. _ Linton just had the call over Kokowai in the hotting on tho Farewell Handicap, Im, but 3 Mettle Drift (Rorke’s Driftr— Mettle, M'Lollan) was evidently better for his run in tho Cup, and won nicely by a length and n-quarter from Kokowai. with 4 Flag Lieutenant a neck away third. The favorite £id not appear to act in the going, and nearly fell after going half a mile.' He was catching the leaders in the straight, but had too much ground to make up. Time, Imin 47sec.
