OTAGO DEFEATS CANTERBURY. [Special to the ‘ Star.’] CHRISTCHURCH, February 24. The ialerprovincial bowling match Can- i terbury v. Otago was played on tho St. Albans green this afternoon. There was a large crowd of spectators, and play in tho different rinks was keenly followed. Tho match was an eight-rink one of j twenty-five heads, to be decided on aggro- | gate points. The visitors came up tvhh aj hot combination, which included players j from different parts of Otago Province. ! The St. Albans green was in good order, i running very true, but, on account of the I recent rain, was a bit dull at the commencement of the game, but subsequently improved, and the majority of players soon found the strength. Before j the commencement of the match, at 21 p.m., Mr G. W. C. Smithson, president of i the Canterbury Centre, formally welcomed | the visitors to Christchurch. At the start j Canterbury got into the leading position, j but at the conclusion of tho ninth head : Otago had drawn level with 61 all. At the twelfth head Canterbury was 83 and 1 Otago 80. The aggregate points at the j sixteenth head were Canterbury 120, Otago | 103, and at the twenty-first it was Canterbury 144, Otago 139. The visitors played much better in the last heads, and ran out winners by 13 points, the aggregate being : Otago 180, Canterbury 167. _ The match was° very close, each team winning three rinks, and there were two ties. M’Lachlan v. Amtman.—The scoring was fairly even all through, but on the twenty-second head Canterbury got a lead of sx. Otago was four down when tho last head commenced. Canterbury was lying two when the skips played. Amtman “ wicked ” and burnt the head with his last ball In replaying Amtman had four shot balls, and was tieing, when M’Lachlan pushed one out, and, thus saving, Otago had only three up, and so Canterbury won the game by 21-20. Healey v. Smeaton.—The game was more even than the scores of 17-26 would indicate. Otago gained six on the 20th head, and held the advantage, although Henley won the last head. Wylie v. Payne.—At the twenty-second head" Wylie was two up, but Payne drew level, and at the twenty-fourth head the scores were 23-24. Playing the last head Canterbury was lying shot, when Payne drew perfectly and got shot._ Wylie just failed to rest him out, but with his second ball the Kaiapoi man got shot and tied—--24 all.

Spiller v. Harrnway. —This rink aroused the most interest in the match. At the end of the sixteenth head the Sydenham crack skip had a lead of three. At the nineteenth tho scores were 17-12. Harmway improved his position, and was only one down at the end of the twenty-second head. He won the next two heads, and the scores when the last head was started were 18-20. When the skips went to the mat Canterbury was lying two. Harraway drew shot, while Spiller’s was short, but ho drew shot with his last ball, and lay two up. thus drawing the game with 20 all. This was the last match to bo completed. Redpath v. Smith.—Although Otago put up a high score, the game was a good even one. Otago got six on the twenty-second head and four on the next, and this put Redpath’s rink absolutely out of the running, the final scores being 16-30. Sinclair v. Scott. —Canterbury had a fair chance up to the twenty-third head, when the scores were 18-23, but the second last head was won by Scott with three balls counting. In the last head Dunedin lay nicely, but Henderson, playing third, came through with a running shot and_ dislodged the shot ball and lay by kitty. Scott missed a trail by inches, and the last head went to Canterbury by two balls, Otago winning by six. Chegwin v. Jolly.—The Central Otago men were never in the running. In the last head, when Jolly was lying three. Chegwin went into second place, leaving the final scores 24-15.

Gow ,v. Calder.—Otago had four shot balls, but Angus, the third man in the Timaru rink, trailed kitty outand got shot. He was displaced by Kear, but Gow, with his last ball, drew right up to kitty and lay one up, winning by-25-19. .The visiting bowlers were entertained at' a smoke concert by the Canterbury Bowling Centre to-night. '

The team left for Tima.ru this rooming, and reach Dunedin by the second express to-night. ROTORUA TOURNAMENT. The second Rotorua bowling tournament concluded yesterday. Thirty-eight rinks, all from the -North Island, competed. A Tauranga rink, skipped by E. Crowley, won, beating To Aruba (Morrison) in the final by 24-17. CITY CORPORATION v. HARBOR BOARD. A friendly match between members of the City Corporation and the Harbor Board took place yesterday afternoon on the Otago Chib’s (Keen, when the game was played under ideal conditions. Following are the scores (city councillors’ names appearing first) -.—Hayward, Green, (’aider, Hancock 26, Roberts, M'Dona-ld, Wilkinson, Loudon 21; Thorn, Siucock, Walker, Begg 24, Suiuistrum, Roberts, Larnnch, Galbraith 24. Totals: City Corporation 49, Harbor Board 45.
