LOCAL RAILWAY DISPUTE

THE lIORIZION CLEARS. WORK TO GO ON. The local railway dispute, which, by ■ultimatum ol the men, was to culminate in a strike at midnight if a disrated eughmm.m was not reinstated, assumes a more satisfactory aspect to-day. A meeting of the branch of the Locomotive Engineers, Firemen, and Cleaners’ Union was held last night, and a telegram tyas received from the general secretary, Mr APArloy, explaining that he had been in Wanganui on Sunday, and that he had not received the Dunedin Union’s telegram till Monday. Mr M'Arley advised the union to stay its hand in the meantime. The following resolution was thereupon passed : That owing In our general secretary being out of Wellington and not receiving our decision, passed at Sunday’s meeting, we have, acting on the advice of our Executive Council in Wellington, decided to stay our hand in the meantime and abide by the Executive Council’s decision in the matter. The local trouble has therefore been banded over to the executive in Wellington. As the position stands now, the local trains will not cense running to-night, and there seems every likelihood that the dispute will be satisfactorily settled.
