THE ROSLYN FIRE

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I think it most deplorable that wo have an elaborate and equipped five brigade in Roslyn, and when a fire occurs they are hampered in their efforts to extinguish it through lack of water. Mr M‘Curdle explains in last night’s paper the reason for this. He tells us that the official was in town on business; consequently was not on liand to turn on the water. This is tho second occasion that this has happened. Perhaps Mr M'Curdie could tell us where tho official was on the night of Chapmair’s fi.ro at DonotUii - . I don’t think tho housewives were washing on that occasion—it happened at 2 o’clock in tho morning. I am informed that on that occasion, the man in charge of tho reservoir could not bo awakened. A nice state of affairs! To think we have to maintain a brigade and feel that wo jure protected, when as ’ a matter of tart wo have no protection owing to the water being always turned off. Now, if this sort, of tiling is to continue tho sooner the brigade is done away with the better. There is no use living in a fool’s paradise. There is another matter I would like to refer to. When tho brigade was called out to a gor.se fire the motor refused to go. In fact, I think tho motor we have in Roslyn is obsolete and out of date. I would like to ask through your columns tho reason, for turning off the water. Air M'Curdie says that overtures were made to tho Fire Board to have a man permanently stationed at tho reservoir, but the board turned the proposal clown. I think it behoves the council tc saddle tho responsibility _ themselves, and thereby protect the residents of Eoslyn and neighboring boroughs. —I am, etc,, DIEGtrETED. [The point of Mr M'Cizrdle’B explanation is that the water was not tarried off. Hie pressure, however, was inadequate.-~ Ld. E.S."]
