THE TURF
[Gossip bi Old Identixt.] War-tone, who got beaten in the D.J.C. Trial Stakes, is Warstep's first foal. G. njirray Aynsley mentioned at Wingatui that all his two-year-olds are turned out on account of strangles. Amongst them is a brother to Wartone, who has taken to the barrier better than any youngster this trainer ever had—in fact the colt loves the barrier, and runs to it if he gets a chance. Sedd-el-Bahr is now the property of F. Shaw. C. Gieseler gave the horse away. Hogan's acceptances for the Southland Club's first day did not get there in time. Kilboyne has gone sore, and his return to racing is therefore delayed. James Crawford deserves thanks for the excellent order of the Wingatui course for the summer meeting, and the spotless condition of the rooms. The Lake County Jockey Club has received permission to change the dates of its meeting from December 15 and 16 to | March 17 and 18. The Racing Commission will leave Wellington about January 25, working down the East Coast of the South Island to Invercargill and back through , Central Otago, thence across to the West Coast from Christchurch. In the Auckland Cup of 1880 Libeller and King Quail fell. John Nolan, the I rider of the first-named horee, had his 'skull fractured, and he died. Blackmail, winner of the Palmerston North Stakes, is a three-year-old filly, by Benzonian from Historiette, a granddaughter of Renown. Capriccio started favorite for the Ashbiirtbn Trotting Cup. Half a mile from home (writes "'Templar") Rorke's Drift and Goldstream were out in front, with Whispering Willie putting in one of his characteristic finishes. A furlong from the post Rorke's Drift looked all over a winner, but, vigorously driven by B. Jarden, Goldstream stayed on the better of the pair, and won a good race by over a length. Whispering Willie w*as going great guns at the finish, but spoilt his chance by a couple o£ mistakes in the early stages. Agathos went particularly well over a mile, when his condition gave out, while Emperor, Sungod, and Capriccio raced like non-stayers, all being hampered by the heavy going. Blue Cross was first to turn for home in the Auckland Cup, but, as reported in the 'Sun's' message, at the distance Gasbag had his measure. Halfwav down the running First Salute and Starland tackled Gasbag, and in a ding-dong finish Starland beat First Salute by a neck, Gasbag being a head further away, third, with Oratress, Woody Glen, and Blue Cross next. Starland was ridden bv J. Glover, ! who for some time has been associated/ with R. Hannon's stable. Had Gasbacf enjoyed a better passage he would havf won. Oratress had every chance, bijft the weight told its tale towards tj6o close. Woody.Glen was putting in sdflid work over the last half-mile, but he /trot hemmed in turning for home, and /tfiV had what appeared-to be an excellent chance frustrated by ill-luck. Th<T fw mile was run in Imin 37|sec, thfe mile
and a-quarter in 2min 15sec, and the last four furlongs in 50-J;6ec. The 'Dominion' report of the Manawatu Cup reads thus: Imaribbon, the favorite, was not on her best behavious at the barrier, and considerably delayed the start, but eventually the field was despatched in a line. Nobleman was first prominent. Passing the stand Cleft was in front, with Lovematch, Moutoa Ivanova, Nobleman, and Dusky Eve in attendance, Client and Bonnie Maid in the rear. Going along the back Lovematch was in the van, but on entering, the straight the field closed up, Moutoa lvanova being the leader. Dusky Eve Bonnie Maid, and Lovematch all •challenged, but Client got a lucky run on the lence, and, finishing strongly, woii by half a length. The race was'a. false run one, and suited the winner down to the ground. ; Red Tape won a double at the,-Cattle Hat non-totahsator meeting on Tiiesday Gloaming won the Islington Plate at Auckland a year ago, with his stablemate Rossini second. This year Gloaming won again, with his stab'le-anate V-s----pucci second. _ Starland, winner of the Auckland Cup. is by Nassau from StardanZ-er. Which side of his pedigree does he (Vet his staving from? Nassau, perhaps; Stardancer for sure.
