OTAGO ANNUAL REGATTA
ENTRIES DISAPPOINTING. ’ Though not ideal from a spectator’s point of view, the weather for the annual Otago Regatta at Port Chalmers to-day was most favd!able for oarsmen. The water was calm, and there was an absence of wind. The heavy southerly drizzle that commenced this morning cleared off before the first event of the programme, and by that time several hundred people werepresent, white many more were expected to arrive during the afternoon. The Tara-, wera, which was berthed at the George street wharf, was' utilised as the flagship, and also as the station for the judges and officials, the rowing events finishing between the steamer and the dock head. The motor and sailing events were controlled from the ketch Water Lilv. which was anchored in the stream. Although the number of entries in all events wera disappointing, the standard of competition_ was regarded as satisfactory by the officials. The absence of crews from Christchurch and Southland was noticeable. An energetic committee, with Mr W. J. Wilson as supervisor, had all arrangements complete, and events were got off well up to schedule time. The Judges of rowing were Messrs M. 11. Priest, F. D. Kesteven, J. James; and of sailing and motoring, Messrs E. Knewstubb, H. Percy, A. Grant, and A. D. Asher. Mr G. Hogan was umpire of rowing, Mr W. Morgan acted as starter of rowing events, and Mr H. Percy as starter of sailing and motoring. Mr E. S. Wilson was, as usual, a capable and obliging secretary. A telegram was received from the Prime Minister expressing thanks for an invitation to be present, and regret at his inability to be present. Results: YOUTHS’ DOUBLE SCULLS.
