During the voyage from Southampton of the Arawa, which reached Auckland yesterday. Captain E, H. Bell, a retired Army officer, died from bronchitis. It is mentioned that the Prime Minister (Right Hon. W. F. Massey) may make a. tour of the South 'Sea Islands in which New Zealand is interested in H.M.S. Chatham, the presentation Dominion cruiser (now on her way to New Zealand) during April next. Mr E. H. Hiiey. formerly General Manager of New Zealand Railways, has accepted an important railway appointment in India, and has proceeded to that country. The undermentioned officers of the New Zealand Staff Corps have been posted to the_ retired list, with permission to retain their rank and wear the prescribed uniform (dated Ist January, 1921) :—Majorgeneral Sir Alfred William ■ Robin, K.C.M.S., C.B. ; Major Henry Charles Nutsford, M.8.E.; Major John Murray Ross, M.C., with the rank of lieutenantcolonel, in recognition of distinguished service in the late war (dated Ist December. 1920).' Miss D. R. Robertson, M.A. (Otago University), with first class hmonors in English and French, has been appointed assistant mistress at the Wellington Technical College. Miss Robertson was formerly on the staff of the Auckland Girls’ Grammar School, and is now at the Christchurch Technical College. The Prime Minister (Mr Massey) was the only Minister left in Wellington for Christmas ; but if pressure of.business permits he hopes to be able to go north for a few days’ rest before the holiday season is over. Detective-sergeant E. W. Scott is under orders of transfers from Wellington to Invercargill, to fill the vacancy occasioned by the lemoval of Detective-sergeant Cameron. Detective W. T. Kelly, who has been temporarily stat’oned in Invercargill, will return to Dunedin on the arrival of Detective-sergeaHt Scott. Mr James Drummond, M.A., first assistant master at the Auckland Grammar School, has been appointed senior inspector of secondary schools for the Dominion. On Friday afternoon at Wa-kari Hospital Mrs Macfie was made the recipient of a gold-mounted fountain pen from the soldier patients in appreciation of her untiring efforts on their behalf whilst in hospital. TK© patients feelingly eulogised the splendid work done for invalid soldiers by Mrs Macfie, who suitably responded. Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., Kellington Magistrate (formerly resident in Dunedin), is spending a holiday in this City. The name of Miss Eleanor Haggitt (a pupil of Miss Hawcridge) was omitted from the list of advance grade passes in the Associated Board of the Royal Academy of Music examinations. She gained 122 marks. , Christmas greetings received and reciprocated from Bishop Cleary, Colonel M'Donald (0.C., Otago district), Mr A. R. Kennedy (registrar of births, deaths, and marriages), and the Mayor, councillors, and staff of Port Chalmers. A Tokio cable states that the Emperor Yoshihito, of Japan, who - has been ill for a long period, presided at the Privy Council for the first time for a year. He appeared almost restored to health, and his complete recovery is expected soon. Mrs Thornton, of The Terrace, Wellington, celebrated her 94th birthday on the 22nd inst. Mrs Thornton, who enjoys excellent health, came out to New Zealand in 1857. Mr G. IT. Bullard, Commissioner of Crown Lands for Taranaki, has been appointed (subject to appeal) Commissioner of Crown Bands for Canterbury, in succession to Mr H. D. Haszard. who retires from the Lands and Survey Department at the end of March. —Christchurch correspondent. The Hon. W. Nosworthy, Minister of Agriculture, is spending the Christmas holiday at Ashburton. It is rumored that Colonel G. F. C. Campbell, Secretary to the Treasury, who has been on a visit to England, will be the next Public Trustee. Miss M. M'Lean. principal of Wellington Girls’ College, is spending part of her holiday in Picton, and then visits Otago. Dean C. W. Carrington, of Christchurch, leaves for England early in the new year. The Governor-General, Lord Jeliicoe, and Lady Jeliicoe visited the Remuera Lawn Tennis Club’s courts on Tuesday afternoon. They played a .doubles match with Mrs S. C. Hodges, lady champion of New Zealand, and Mr J. F. Ewen, president of the club.
