BOXING

A fifteen-round heavy-weight contest at the National Sporting Club between Jack Curpbey (America) and Arthur Townley (Britain) was won in the second round by Curpbey. In honor of his winning the Australasian heavy-weight championship at Brisbane last month, Mr Brian H'Cleary, the wellknown Ashburton and Christchurch amateur boxer (son of Mr J. M'Cleary, Dunedin), was entertained at a social in the Theatre Royal, Ashburton. Mr J. C. N. Grigg. president of the Ashburton Ath'letic Club, in proposing the health of “ Our Champion,’' said that their- guest, who in the recent Australasian tournament had been opposed to an opponent 6ft 4in high, had shown his qualifications, because he was comparatively light, for a heavyweight.
