PORT CHALMERS COUNCIL

Tho fortnightly meeting yesterday evening was attended by the Mayor (Mr J. M. Stevenson), Crs Coleman, M'Lachlau, Jones, Mawson, 'fait, M'Donald, Alien, Limn, and Isbister. The District Health Officer (Dr T. M'Kibbin) forwarded a circular detailing provision made under the new Health Act for health inspectors. Otago and Southland (exclusive of Dunedin and Invercargill) had been grouped into nine districts, for the purpose of providing one inspector for every 15,000 of population. Under this grouping Port Chalmers, having a population of 2,620, would be called on to contribute £43 per annum for. a district inspector.—His Worship said this was in the right direction, and councillors should familiarise themselves with the proposals. —Referred to Sanitary Committee. The Works Committee recommended that an application be made to the Minister of Internal Affairs for the Port Chalmers Borough Council to be gazetted a licensing authority under the Explosives and Dangerous Goods Amendment Act, 1920; that the 6in sewer from the foot of Constitution street across Scotia street to Kaio lane' be renewed a distance of 148 ft at an approximate cost of £27, including a new mud taaik; that a new- 6in sewer be laid across the reclaimed land at Carey's Bay from Mr Gibb's stable to the beach (a distance of 40ft), at an approximate cost of £l2 10s.—Cr Jones pointed out the need for a sewer and concrete channelling in Mount, street for the sake of the school children.—Report adopted ; work, excepting of an urgent nature, to be carried out in rotation. The Finance Committee reported that

the receipts were £360 14s lOd and ex- ' penditure £454; gasworks receipts £7O 4s 6d, expenditure £236 2s.—Adopted. The Reserves Committee recommended that the insurance on Johnston's buildings be increased to £4OO, and that a report on all borough insurances be laid on the council table next meeting.—Cr C'olman said the long cut off of the water the previous Saturday was due to an attempt to renew a faulty valve, in addition to putting a new service in.—Report adopted. The Gas Committee reported that the gas manager expected the new retorts to be in working order next month, and the committee recommended him a bonus of £lO for extra work at those retorts. The foreman (J. Garrett) reported that the tunnel had been driven a distance of 22ft as from Monday, 6th December, and four sets of timber .put in.' The material driven through was rotten rock, and the cost without the timber was 14s per foot. He expected to finish the Mussel Bay end next week, and then make a start at the harbor end. Two borough men were employed at present.—Adopted. After the Mayor and the' councillors had exchanged the season's greetings the council adjourned until after the holidays.
