BURNS CLUB
The monthly gathering of the Burns Club last evening was largely attended. Tne president (Mr R. M'Kinlay) apologised for the absence of a piper, and mentioned that the Hallowe'en concert would be held in the Early Settlers' Hall on Saturday week. He also made reference to memorials and statues erected to- the memory of Robert Burns in various parts ot the world. There were 14 in Scotland, three 111 England, one in Ireland, four in Australia, nine irf America, five in Canadaand two in New Zealand. Of the lastnamed, one was in Dunedin and one in Timara, while a third was almost completed in Auckland. That evening, Mr M'Kinlay stated, they were going to listen to musical items by Mr Johnstone's pupils. He called upon the choir,, which was under the direction of Mr H. W. Armitage, to sing 'Cam Ye by Athol?' Other part songs given later bv the choir were 'Annie Laurie' and 'My Love a Highland Lad was Born.' The other programme items were ' We'd Better Bide a Wee' (Miss Molly Vickers), song (Mr R. Henderson), «Bonnie Scotland, I Adore Ihee (Mr Blair Tennent), duet, ' O Wert Thou m tho Caiikl Blast?' (Misses Molly Vickers and Doris Dempster); 'Mary of Argyle' -{Mr E. Blackmur), humorous recitation. 'Courting Under Difficulties' Miss Elsie Ford); ' Gae Bring Tae Me' (Mr \v. James); dance, the Sailor's Hornpipe (Miss Thelma Gillespie); 'Let Me Love Thee' (Mr A. W. Alloo). All the singers were warmly applauded, the accompaniments to the songs being played by Miss E. Wright and Mr W. James.
