TECHNICAL COLLEGE MANAGERS
The monthly meeting of the' Board of Management of the King Edward Technical College was held yesterday afternoon. There were present Messrs T. Scott (chairman). J. Wallace, E» A. Rosevear, E. P. Duthie, G. Clark, P. M'Kinlay, D. Larnach, and Dr Colquhoun. On the motion of trie Chairman, it was decided to place on record a resolution of sympathy with Mr J. H. Wilkinson in the d'eatti of his father.
In connection with the Callander scholarships, a suggested variation of the conditions, to me.et the wishes of the Wellington Boaid, was not agreed to. The director's report stated that, as was ■usual during the last term of the year, the applications received by the college from employers seeking the services of young people were greatly in excess of the supply of qualified candidates offering. Tn ordinary times this demand was regarded as a significant index of the value of the training given by the school, and consequently worthy of encouragement. Under conditions as they at present existed, however, the future success and prospects of many of the younger pupils were being prejudiced by their early withdrawal from school to enter employment, for in several instances that had come under his notice girls had secured position"; before being sufficiently advanced or qualified • for them. Until within the last (few weeks the weather had not been favorable for taking the boys of the agricultural course to the faTm, but it was anticipated that for the next month at least they would be able to take part in many of the operations necessary at this time of the year on the farm. Progress had been made with the erection of the retaining wall along the York place frontage, and this would be continued as the excavation proceeded.— Mr Wallace suggested that the services of an agricultural instructor should be secured, and eventually the matter was left in the hands of the director to report.— The remainder of the report was adopted. The Finance Committee recommended accounts amounting to £145 19s 6d for payment, and also monthly salaries totalling £625 £ss lOd. It was further reported that donations of £25 each had been received from Messrs A. and jO Burt and the Iron and Steel Company.-—On the motion of Mr Duthie the report was adopted, and the donors wore thanked.
