WAR GRATUITY
EXTENSION OF PAYMENTS,

WELLINGTON, October 20. Acceding to many requests to remove anomalies in the distribution of the Expeditionary Force war gratuity, the Government have introduced an amendment to the Military Service Bill, which will enable the gratuity to be paid in the discretion of .the Minister of Defence to the personal representatives of a deceased soldier, who would have been entitled thereto, and it will be distributed as if it formed part of his estate. In order to meet other cases of hardship to dependents of deceased soldiers who do not come wV-hin the 6cope of the original gratuity scheme it is provided that on application by any relative of the deceased, or by any person who during any period of infancy of the deceased had been in fact, whether legally or not, charged with his maintenance, care, and control the Minister may refer the application to the War Pensions Board for" consideration and report; and may on the recommendation of that_ board make such payment to the applicant as he thinks fit, as if the applicant were the person eligible to receive payment of the bonus,
