MEETINGS AND SOCIALS

The fortnightly meeting of Court Trido of tho Leith, A.0.F., was held on Wednesday evening at the Oddfellows' Hall. Albany street. C.R. Bro. P. Holdaway presided over a large gathering of members and visitors. During the evening eight new members were admitted, and there were five further nominations. All the newly-elected officers carried out their duties in a highly satisfactory manner. Much satisfaction was expressed on the successful resnlt of tho protracted negotiations with the medical officers of friendly societies. The members took part in impromptu speeches through the medium of the question box, P.D.C.R. Bro. W. B. Anderson acting as judge. Owing to the pressure of business the full programme was not carried out. and was left over. The toast of " The Visitors " was replied to by P.C.R. Bro. A. J. Morrison on behalf of Court Ebccekior, and by P.C.R. Bro._ H. Cummings on behalf of Court Robin Hood.

The monthly meeting of the "North-east Valley School Committee was held on Tuesday evening, there being present Mr J. Elliot (in the chair). Mesdamea Begg and Elliot, Messrs Hilliker, Bardsley, Campbell, and Steele. The head master's report showed the attendance to be : Bovs 319, girls 287, out of a roll of 374 boys and 336 girls. The attendance for the last quarter was 281 boys and 237 girls, out of an average roll of 704. The' Library Committee reported having added 62 new _ the library since last meeting. The Visiting Committee (Messrs Elliot and Bardsley) reported having visited the school and finding the work going on as usual, the staff having no complaints to make. After the business had been concluded Mr Flamank (the head master) attended and explained to the committee the methods he adopted j n conducting the business of the school. Questions were asked and answered. The following motion was carried:—"That the committee assure ifr Flamank of their good-will and of their confidence in his work in connection with the conduct of the school." A vote of thanks to Mr Flamank for attending and supplying the information to the committee concluded the meeting. The Hope of Dunedin Lodge of Good Templars held their weekly meeting on Wednesday evening in the lodge room Zealandia Chambers. Dowling street Bro' Meek, C.T.. presiding. G.C.T. Bro.' DaL ton and D.C.T. Bro. Sincock visited officially, and wero received with the honors of distinguished visitors. The G.C.T. presided for the evening, and initiated one candidate. Portobello was selected for the nicnic on Labor Day in conjunction with the Rescue Lodge. The use of the lodge room was granted for next meeting of District Lodge. The G.C.T. presented Sister Crawford with the Grand Lodge regalia given by Bro. Ford, of Chrfstchurch, to the_ member introducing most candidates durinjr the quarter, Sister Crawford being the winner. In handing it over Bro. Dalton congratulated the winner on her good work done for the Order. The District Chief also spoke, and expressed his pleasuse at being present. Sister Gain (lodge chaplain), who has been on the sick list, received a heart- welcome on entering, and thanked the members for .their kind reception. Votes of thanks were responded to by the G.C.T., D.C.T., and C.T. Rescue Lodore.

A farewell social was tendered to Mrs Tomkinson in the hall of Ravensbourne Presbyterian Church on Wednesday eveninn; by a number of her friends and' fellowmembers of the church. Tn presenting her with a leather suitcase for her husband, Mr E. Tomkinson (formerly chief clerk the Dunedin Harbor Board), -who left for Christchurch a few weeks ago, the Rev. A. Gray referred to the many good qualities of Mr and Mrs TjOmkinson, who with large hearte and open hands had done much for the people of the district. Mr T. Ross, in presenting Mrs Tomkinson with a silver water jug and a set of rustless knives, spoke, from long acquaintance with her and her paTente and family, of the great good they had done in a quiet, unostentatious manner. Messrs J. B Grant and G. W. C. Macdonald spoke' to the same effect, and Mr Simpson suitably replied on behalf of Mr and Mrs Tomkinson. A short musical programme was pleasingly rendered bv Misses Crawley and Macdonald, Mrs Newer, and Messrs C. Ball and W- Connor.
