LONDON, October 14. Earl Grey and Lord Robert Cecil have written a joint letter controverting Mr Lloyd George's suggestion that reprisals ifl Ireland should be condoned, and advocating the shooting of those guilty of murdering the " police. Apparently overwhelming evidence existed that armed forces of the Crown' were systematically burning' houses and killing or wounding the inhabitants, the victims including Protestant Unionists. It is further alleged that this policy; was - sanctioned by the Government, including the Prime Minister. The grave charges require full and immediate investigation.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
THE GOVERNMENT'S POLICY.
POLICE FORCE INCREASED.
LONDON, October 13. Sir Hamar Greenwood (Chief Secretary for Ireland), in a speech at Belfast, stated that Lord French, Sir Nevill Macready, and himself were in complete accord. No resignations were impending. The Government intended to proceed with the Home Rule Bill, and-were prepared to enlarge it in the most generous way possible, in the hope of securing a complete and final settlement; but they could not tolerate independence for the whole or any part of Ireland.—A. and N.Z. Sir Hamar Greenwood stated that tho police force would be increased by as inaivy thousands as were necessary to defeat the murder campaign. It had been decided to organise a force of special constables.—A. and N.k. Cable.
A FATAL EXPLOSION
LONDON. October 13
Five men were killed aud five wounded in an explosion in- an unoccupied house in Newross, County Wexford. The cause is unknown, but it is surmised that the house was a manufactory- for Sinn Fein bombs.— A. and N.Z. Cable.
October 14.
It is now stated that seven are dead through the explosion in a house at Newross, and five wounded are in custody on a charge of experimenting in bombmaking. —A. and N.Z Cable.
