Mr George J. Lancaster, M.A., has been selected from 26 applicants in New Zealand and Australia to be head master of the Christchurch Boys* High School in succession to Mr C. E. Eevan Brown. Mr Lancaster is an old boy of the High School, and is at present senior mathematics master at the school. He held both a senior and junior New Zealand University scholarship. He was for five years assistant master at St. John’s College, Auckland, and afterwards was senior assistant at Nelson-College for 13 years, Mr James Begs has been recommended by the affiliated A. and P. Professor Hewitson has been seriously indisposed for , the last three waaks. Though his condition is improving, he will not be ablo to do active work for some time. His proposed visit to Canada and the United States has been postponed. Several presbyteries in the South Island have nominated Professor Hewitson as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. At tire meeting of Christchurch ■ Presbytery yesterday similar action was taken. A motion of sympathy, coupled with the hope of a speedy recovery, was passed. Miss Muriel Eagar left this morning for Oamaru under engagement to the Oamaru Orchestral Society to sing at their forthcoming concert. Mr W. Downie Stewart, though still considerably crippled as the result of war exposure, is (says the Wellington ‘ Post ’) one of the most conscientious members of the House in his attendance at sittings, and one of the keenest followers of the debates. It is not often that he joins in the discussion, but when he does his remarks invariably bear the impression of careful thought and wide reading. Probably no other private member exhibits in his speeches a more cosmopolitan acquaintance with political movements elsewhere.
