PREVENTION OP CRUELTY

The monthly meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held in Mr E. S. Wilson's board room yesterday afternoon. .Mr Crosby Morris presided.

In respect to the proposal that members of the society should address the various troops of Boy Scouts with a view to enlisting their sympathy in the prevention of cruelty, Scoutmaster Holderness wrote giving a list of the times and places of the different parades.—The matter was held oyer until the next meeting. Replies to a letter wh.ich the societv sent out respecting the cruelty involved in despatching.ewes which were near lambing to the saleyards were received from a number of stock agents, all of whom promised to do their beet to put down the practice. Mr Sh'go asked if the instances were not fairly common in which stock were left in trucks for -unduly long periods. The chairman and Mr Elliott replied that so far as they wera aware—and thov had a good deal to do with the consignment of stock—cases of this kind were not by any means frequent. In regard,to the question of live pigeonshootmg matches, the following letter was read from the Prime Minister:—" I am in receipt of your letter of September 16 expressing the feelings of your committee in regard to the proposals contained in the bill introduced by Mr Statham with reference to live pigeon-shooting, and urging that if any amendment is being made to the Police Offences Act steps will betaken to include Mr Statham's proposal In reply, I have to inform you that I shall os glad to arrange for your request to receive consideration when amendments to the Police Offences Act are under ieview."—The letter was received.
