WEATHER AND WATER
HEAVY THAW SWELLING RIVERS. "Our Own" at Cromwell wired at 9.35 to-tfayr—"Since Wednesday' afternoon theTe has been a very heavy thaw, and the enow has all disappeared, with the exception of that on tho mountain tops. The weather is still mild. A heaw storm is threatening. Both tlie rivers rose considerably during the night and are still rising fairly fast." Mr Couston. engineer of tho Taieri Cotmty Council, informs us that the river at Hindon and at Middlemarch was 2ft above normal at 11 a.m. and rising, and that the weather was threatening. The anxiety tinder the conditions stated above was as to whether the thaw water would have time to get away before rain fell. -At 3 p.m. tho appearances in Dnnedin were that rain was imminent.
It will bs a year to-morrow since fiood3 troubled the Taieri. . _ If rain does not come, or comes onlv, lightlv, so as not to further swell the already-swollen rivers, the thaw of vesterday and to-day will prove a great blessing. Cromwell advised at 1.30 p.m. : "Kawarau River rose Bft since last night and still rising rapidly; warm winds of yesterday thawing enow off hills. Chitha River only rose Ift ; very muggy weather threatening for rain."
