GOLF AT HOME. LONDON, June 30. The Open Golf Championship was begun at Deal. This is the first championship to be played since 1914. The game is 72 holes medal play, and 36 holes were played to-day. Mitchell 147, Barnes and Leld 150, Ray and Wingate 155 are leading. RACING DATES—AN.UNTORTUNATE POSITION. [Special to the 'Stae."] CHRISTOHURCH, July 2. There is a danger of a congested calendar in February affecting racing and trotting interests in Christchurch and Dunedin. The Canterbury Jockey Club have applied for Saturday, February 5, and the Metropolitan Trotting dub for February 12. In the south the order is reversed, as the Forbury Park Trotting Club wish to race on February 5 and 7, and the Dunedin Jockey Club on February 9 and 12. Apart from other considerations, an adherence to these dates would not allow much time for horses to reach Wingatui after racing at Riccarton. The situation is a serious one for Dunedin sportsmen, who are anxious to make a .week's carnival of their trotting and galloping fixtures in February. There was a clash of dates last May between the Ashburtoa County Racing Club and the Forbury Park Trotting Club, and a similar thing will occur next autumn if the two clubs adhere to the dates they have applied for.

(Received July 2, at 9.10' a.m.) Carpentier is expected to arrive in Now York on July 2 in order to confer with Dempsey and his promoter (Mr Curley) to form tentative plans for the championship contest. Carpentier sails for France on July 10, returning to the United States in September. He will meet Battling Levinsky in October. The New York newspapers have received a telegram from Jack Kearns, stating that he and Dempsey are travelling to New York to extend a challenge to Carpentier in person. Dempsey will arrange to meet the American contender (?) in the event of Carpentier not accepting the offer to fight the champion this year.
