The urgent necessity for facilities for lifting heavy weights on the Lyttelton waterfront was illustrated on Tuesday (says the Christchurch 'Press’), when the Corinna had to load a 41-ton bailer, consigned to a freezing works at New Plyiftonth. There is no crane on the wharves which would lift this weight except the Harbor Board's 10-ton fixed crane on the No. 1 breastwork, and this is reported to be out of order at present. In any case,' it would have hem necessary to, have shifted the vessel from No. 7 wharf to the other end of the inner harbor. They difficulty was got over by the Corinna using double derricks, with double blocks on oacli. Tlie vessel gave a decided list when the weight waW taken. The work took fully an hour to perform, during which time rilost of the men had to stand idle. Comparisons were made of the time and labor necessary in this instance and

the ease with which a floating crane «on)d 1 have picked up the boiler (or a much heavier weight) anddeposited it on the deck of -the steamer. . . , A CONGESTION AT ENGLISH PORTS. It is reported by shipping firms in Melbourne that the British-Australian service is being seriously disorganised. Vessels laden with refrigerated and other cargoes from Australia are being kept waiting outside the docks in London, Hull, Manchester. and Liverpool for periods varying from two and three weeks up to two months and more before being allotted wharfage space on which to-, discharge their cargoes. The loss thus incurred both to ship-owners and shippers has already amounted to many thousands ox pounds, and the Commonwcrlth Government Line is one of the heavy losers. It is officially stated that Commonwealth steamers -have recently been delayed in English ports for five and six weeks; while two vessels of the Commonwealth and Dominion Line, the steamers . Port Hacking and the Port Nicholson, wero delayed for 77 and 62 days respectively over normal time. <• VESSELS IN WIRELESS CALL.
