OCTAGON THEATRE

The new programme screened for the first time at the Octagon this afternoon is headed by a Paramount drama entitled ' Tho Avalanche,' based on Gertrude Atherston's book x of the same name. Opening leisurely with a train of incidents which gathers interest and momentum as it proceeds, the picture shows how the girl Chichita, after her gambling father's death, marries another gambler, who shoots himself, leaving her with a little daughter, Helene, who is placed in a convent, and grows up m ignorance of her mother's identity. Years later Heleno, happily married, relieves the tedium of her husband's temporary absence from home by visiting a fashionable gambling resort. The hire of the tables lays hold upon her.. Time and again sho returns to tho place, and gets heavily into debt. The proprietor's wife, Madame Delano, half-recognises in Helene her own daughter, and warns her of impending ruin. When at length the proprietor, impatient for his money, proceeds to ring up Helene's husband, the distracted girl, in trying to prevent him, causes him to fall over a balcony to his death. Convinced that Helene is her daughter, Madame Delano helps her to escape, and allows herself to be arrested. Then, in the solitude of her cell, the mother puts on end to the murder charge by taking her own life. Among the supporting" nictures is a Fatty Arbucklc comedy entitled 'Ba::k Stage.' The box plan'is at Chas. Beg<>and Co.'s.
