The fight for Yalona- raged furiously for four hours, beginning at" midnight. ' Fifteen thousand Albanian insurgents i»laced mines' on all the roads. Thev destroyed bridges and planted captured Italian guns on the heights overlooking the town. They shelled the naval base during the main attack. Italian warships replying. The defenders' plight was almost hopeless at 4 o'clock owing to a treacherous Mussulman attack in their rear, but the Alpini made a desperate charge, slaying 200 and capturing several thousand, 'and a number of guns. Then they rounded up all Mussulmans, whom thev deported to Rrindisi. The Italian losses are severe. The first list contains the names of 57 officers missing. There are disquieting rumors concerning the fate of the Scutari garrison. , „ Later. Ine anti-Italian rising in Albania is now general. Italian garrisons have been forced to quit several Adriatic seaports, and the_ evacuation of Duraz/u and Scutari is imminent." The garrisons, at Santi Anaranta (eight miles north-east of Corfu), Duieigno (on ine Montenegrin coast, 12 miles south of Antivari). and Antivari have been forced to embark. garrison at Tcpelini (south-east of Aalona). though surrounded for many ciavs, is still holding out, and is receiving rations by aeroplane. Dunizv.o continues plurkiiy to resist, but everything is ready for evacuation. It appears that a nat-iori.il uprising is now in progress throughout Albania, = Strikes of seamen and railwavmen are occurring in many Italian po> ts and towns, the object being to prevent the despatch of troops and material across the Adriatic to Albania.
THE PARIS ASSASSINATION. PARIS. June ]4. Rustem, an Albanian student, assassinated Essad Pasha (Dictator of Albani.il m the Rue de Castieliene, holding him to be an enemy of Albania's aspirations. _ Essad Pasha, was entering his motor car trom the Hotel Continental" when Rnstem, who -was'hiding behind a pillar, shot him twice with a revolver. Tlio second bullet penetrated the heart, ani Essad dropped dead. Porters seized Rnstem, whom the crowd halt lynched. Rustern said he wished to avenge .Albania's wroncs, and Essad had been plotting against the newlyiormed Republican Grsniimont. Essad came to Paris, as head of an Albanian delegation, and had staved there since, because Italy refused to permit him to return. ti , Later. It transpires that Essad Pasha received a warning a, week ago, but did not take precautionary measures. Rnstem apparently carried out the decision of a secret society: Rusttm paid: "I acted on behalf of the Albanian cause."
