.gKVEN-A-SLDE TOURNEY, The following is the order of events for the above competition at Carisbrook on Saturday:—2 p.m., Kaikorai , v. Zingari; 2.15, 'Varsity v. Union; 2.30, Alhambra v. PiTates; 2.45, Dunedin v. Port < 3 p.m., One-mile Running Handicap. Foot- « ball : 3.15 p.m., Winners No. Iv. Winners ] No. 2; 3.30, Winners No. 3 v. Winners i No. 4. 3.45 p.-m., Relay Running Race. 4 p.m., Final football seven-a-side, ( REVISED RULES. Some alterations have been the , rules under which Rugby football is played, and theee will come into operation immediately. One of the principal new rulings is that after a player has been tackled the ball can only be brought into play with the foot. The conference of the Referees' Association decided otherwise., but the English Rugby Union emphasise this instruction, and it must therefore be obeyed. The "fair catch" is described as a catcb made direct from a kick, knock-on, or throw-forward by one of the opposite side. The catcher must immediately claim the eame by making a mark with bis heel at the epot where"- he made the catch. It is also pointed out that if a player knocks-on the ball and catches it again before it reaches the ground the play should be allowed to proceed. GERMAN OFFICERS COMPLIMENTARY. Baron Von Taube, who was camp officer at Ruhleben, says to' him the British character was "a perpetual source of surprise. It amazed him to hear two football teams cheer each other after their match was over,_ou the playing fields." Baron Von MuUenbecker (censor of correspondence) mado this remark at the close of a hotly-contested match: "When I see how you'play football I quite understand how "it was that wo failed to beat the 'Contemptible Little Army.'" THE BRITISH LEAGUE TEAM. SYDNEY, Juno 2. The Rugby League have decided to play the match New South Wales against the English team on Saturday next. The English team will be : Full-back, Thomas; three-quarters—Sockwell, Wagstaff, Hurcombe, Stone; half-backs, Rogers and Parkin; forwards—Cunliffe, Mills, Grenew, Johnson, Gallagher, Claik.. The other English fixtures have been altered as follow:—The team play at Orange on the 9th inst., at Sydney against New South Wales on the 12th and 16th, at Brisbane against Australia on the 23rd. The other two test matches will be played in July, but the dates have not been fixed. LEAGUE- SUPPORTERS AGGRESSIVE. SYDNEY, June 2. The recent decision of a section of the University footballers to play the League game has led to much criticism and severe condemnation in amateur circles. With a view to testing'the position, the secretary o the University League Football Club has circularised all sporting bodies, askthem to attend a conference to discuss the question of amateur status and the formation of a wealthier body than the Amateur Sporting Federation to control the sport.
