SCOTTISH CONCERTS
i 3?wo Scottish concerts ware held last night under the auspices of the Piping and Dancing Association of New Zealand—one in the Burns Hall and the other in the King's Theatre. The programme in each case was composed almost entirely of items dear to the heart of the ' Scot, and the attendances proved what a power of attraction these still have in our City. In the Burns Hall the programme of 20 items expanded to nigh on double that number, for the audience were most enthusiastic, and repeatedly demanded encores. Proceedings ' opened appropriately enough with a pipe selection. This was by Piper G. M. Robertson, of Timaru, and later in the evening Piper J. A. Cameron, of Southland, demonstrated his skill on the same instrument. Mr W. H. M'Kenzie pleased the audience with his singing of four songs, including "The Highlandman's Toast' and 'My Land'; Miss Madge Torrance sang of her ' Longing for Loch Lomond' and of ' Angus M'Donald' very nicely indeed. The elocutionist of the evening was Miss, Ivy Mazengarb, and she recited ' The Camerons' and ' Lochinvar' in her usual finished style, adding as encore numbers two humorous monologues, ' one called ' Water Scenes' and the other ' Singers and Talkers.' Mr W. Harrison's four vocal contributions were very warmly received, especially his ' Mountain Lovers ' and 'lt's Slorning.' Miss Jessie Miller sang sweetly 'The Winter. It Is Past,' 'My Heart is Sair,' and ' Comin' Thro' the Rye'; and Mr J. R. Brown amused everyone with a quartet of humorous ditties, the old-timers 'The Weddin' o' Lauchie M'Graw' and the Lauder favorite ' Jean M'Neill' being amongst them. Miss Winnie Geddes played two violin solos. and Miss Flora Shaw and Miss Tuppy Sutherland contributed Highland dances. A quartet, consisting of Masters Edward Robinson and D. A. Thomas and Misses Sutherland and Thelma Gillespie also danced very prettily. Miss Lena Geddes was an efficient accompaniste. A pleasantly-varied programme was submitted at the King's Theatre. The St. Kilda Band opened the proceedings with a selection, ' Memories of Scotland,' which was much enjoyed by the audience. A pretty Highland dance by Misses Winnie Robinson and Daisy M'Lellan and Messrs Robert Clark and Alex. Sutherland followed. Two songs, ' Gae Bring Tae Me ' and "The Battle of Stirling,' were sung very nicely by Mj Arch. Jones, and Miss Mabel Raine was heard to advantage in "The Skye Boat Song' and ' Doon the Burn.' Humorous recitations, 'A Wee Scots' Nicht' and ' Mrs Macdougall's Discovery.' by Mr P. and some humorous stories' by Mr J. G. Deaker Erovoked hearty laughter. Mr A. Rawnson pleased the audience by his singing of "The Braes o* Mar' and 'Cam' Ye by Athol,' and Miss Winnie Robinson danced very daintily the Highland fling. Highland dances, Sean Triubhais and reel o' Tnlloch, the former by Miss Daisy M'Lellan and the latter by Misses Robinson and M'Lellan and Messrs Clark and Sutherland, were much_ enjoyed. Miss C. was the accompaniste. The "two final Scottish concerts of the present serTes wilf be given in Burns Hall and the King's ' Theatre this evening—a concert in each of these two halls. The public can safely be recommended to take this final opportunity of being present at two of the_ finest entertainments of "the kind ever given in the Dominion. Exceptionally good artists are assisting, and the excellence of the .programme certainly merits two bumper houses. Last night Burns Hall was rilled, but plenty of seating accommodation was available at the King's. ■■}
