AUCKLAND. George Ronssell nan found guilty of attempted arson at Hikurangi, with a strong recommendation to mercv, on the ground that accused was well-behaved when sober. He was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment, with hard labor. INYERCAEGILL. 'Hie opened before Mr Justice Sim The calendar was light, consisting of charges against Wm. Joseph Lyons, William Holland, and William Edward Duthie, alleging 'thefts oi petrol, the property of .1. G. Ward ;md Co. The Crown Prosecutor stated that the shortage amounted to 631 cases. After tlie hearing had partly proceeded counsel for the accused withdrew the plea of not guilty. They then pleaded guilty—Duthie and Lyons to theft and Holland'to break-ing-and entering. His Honor sentenced each of the accused to reformative detention for a period not exceeding three years.
