Forecast. The Government Meteorologist (Rev. D. C. Bates) supplied the following at noon to-day :• —Winds, southerly, moderate to strong, and squally at times; the weather will probably prove cold and showery, but should improve soon: there will probably be a hard frost to-night; barometer, rising; sea, heavy; tides, good. ARRIVED.—May 29. Paloonn, s.s. (1.30 p.m.), 2,771 tons, M'Lean, from Melbourne via Bluff. May 30. Kotare, s.s. (0.40 p.m.), 146 tons, Mumby, from Bluff. SAILED.—May 29. Opawa, s.s. (0.30 p.m.), 9,297 tons, Martin, for Bluff. The Oparva left Port Chalmers on Saturday to complete her discharge at the Bluff and to finish her loading for the United Kingdom. The Romuera, which is discharging and loading at Port Chalmers, occupied the Opawa’s deep water berth after the latter left for the Bluff on Saturday. The Wnipori left New Plymouth on Wednesday last, and arrived at Westport at 7 a.m. on Sunday to load for Auckland.

The Paloona is delayed here owing to bad weather, and her departure has been postponed tdl Wednesday, when she sails tor Lyttelton, Wellington ,and Melbourne. EXPLOSIONS HEARD AT SEA. A report from Lyttelton states that lighthouse-keepers at Akaroa and people at Wainui heard, at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday, 29th inst., two loud explosions to seaward. Shipping leaving in that direction is requested to look out for signs of wreckage or men in distress, or other evidence of explosions such as dead floating fish. WITHIN CALL. SHIPPING AFFECTED. [Special to the ‘ Stae.’] CHRISTCHURCH, May 31. The week-end weather was the worst experienced in Christchurch for many years. The Maori’s trip down was one of the dirtiest she has ever experienced. Tile collier Karori, from Westport, arrived at 5 o clock last night. She first encountered the gale at 10 o’clock on Saturday mornmg. when off Kaikoura, and was plugging against it at an average speed of two and three-quarter knots. Some of her deck cargo broke loose, but otherwise she was little the worse for her rough passage. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS.
