FAREWELL SOCIAL
A large gathering assembled in Holy Trinity Schoolroom, Lawrence, to b'd farewell to the Rev. W. and Mrs Uphill, on the eve of their departure to take up work in the parish of St. Peter's, Cavershnm. The first part of the evening was taken up by music. Refreshment? were then handed round, and later Mr W. R. Smythe, churchwarden, who presided, inn" fow words stated the object of the meeting, and expressed the regret felt in all parts of the parish at losing Mr UphilFs services as vicar. By his ability as a preacher and his outstanding virtue'of charity he had endeared himself to a very'large circle of friends by no means confined to those of his _ own communion. On behalf of the parishioners and his many friends who were not Anglicans, he asked his aceep tance of a cheque for himself and' a gold chain and pendant for Mrs Uphill, and expressed the hope that he would be lonn spared to carry on the work for which he was so eminentlv qualified. Mr Uphill, in replying, said that he carried away with him many pleasant recollections of his stay in Lawrence. He thanked them heartilr for their kind words and handsome rifts on behalf of Mrs Uphill and himself, and expressed the hone that he would' have opportunities in the future of visiting Holy Trinity Church and his old friends.
