_NEW YORK, May 10. " Bluebeard " Huirt has been sentenced to imprisonment for life for murdering several of his wives. *
Under arrangement with the police that they would not ask for his execution \l he confessed, Huirt admitted that besides the seven correct wives, he killed several others of'the 26 whom he married. The police testified that it- would have been impossible to convict Huirt of murder if he declined to confess.
The judge, in sentencing him, declared that the crimes were the most heinous in history.

TOKIO, May 11. Investigations conducted by the Foreign Office show that 130,000 Japanese are residing in the United States, 110,000 in Hawaii, 59,000 in China, 31,000 in Brazil, and 60,000 in other countries. LOAN TO CHINA. WASHINGTON, May 1L Tho State Department has formally announced that the Chinese Consortium has been finally organised on the basis suggested by the United States. Banking groups in England, France, Japan, and the United States will be organised, receiving diplomatic support from their respective Governments. Loans will be subject to the approval of the Governments. It is understood that the first loan to China will be 50,000,000 dollars. 'FRISCO SERVICE. SYDNEY, May 11. The Oceanic Steamship Companv have purchased the former Austrian-Lloyd liner, Martha Washington, for the purpose of running in conjunction with the Ventura and Sonoma a three-weekly service across the Pacific. The company have also purchased the cargo steamer Las Vegas, which will be incorporated with the Oceanic Line of steamers, and will henceforth come to Sydney under tie auspices of the General' Steamship Corporation of San Francisco, calling at New Zealand. THE C.G.T. SUPPRESSED. PARIS, May 11. The Council of Ministers ordered the dissolution of the Confederation of Labor (Confederation Generale de Travail), as inimical to national defence. This is regarded as the most drastic measure _ since the Taihvay employees' mobilisation in Paris. GERMAN SUBSTITUTE COTTON. BERLIN, Mav 11. _ the Germans are developing a new "ersatz," a substitute for cotton, which may pay all her debts and re-establish German credits. ''Ersatz" consists of wool cellulose, which is claimed to be usable in the same way as cotton for evervthing
