'The note issue of the Australian Commonwealth now amounts to £57,005,872 against which there is a gold Te<serve of £25.689,888, or equal to 41.56 per cent. Of the note issue 14,561,436 are of a face value of one pound sterling. In view of the present high value of silver the Federal Government intend to ask for immediate authority to issue five shilling notes, which are in process of printing. ° Referring to the sale which has been concluded at Glasgow, by which Messrs J. P. O'Brien and Co., distillers and wine merchants, of Glasgow, purchased the business of Mes/ra Bulloch, Lade and co. distillers, Glasgow, including all their large stocks of whisky and their three distilleries, the London ' Times ' says : " This is stated to be the biggest deal that has ever taken place in the whisky trade. The sum involved is about a [million pounds."
