TAXING WAR WEALTH. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. Imperial Nows Service. LONDON, April 13. The House of Commons Committee on Taxation of War Wealth have resumed their sittings. Sir John Anderson, chairman of the Inland Revenue Board, submitted three alternative schemes to meet the suggestion that a liberal abatement, based on the amount of pre-war wealth, should bo allowed in order to cover savings and to recognise the diminished value of the pound sterling. The duty under each scale is limited in order not to reduce tho post war wealth under £5,000. Tho first scale, which affects 45,000 persons, is estimated to produce £450,000,000; the second scale, affecting 105,000 persons, is estimated to yield £700,000,000; and the third scale, affecting 75.000 persons, is estimated to yield £300.000,000. Sir John Anderson said that unless they could aim at a yield of £SOO,OCD,OOy it was questionable whether it would be worth while facing the cost of the financial disturbances. The committee adjourned after Sir John Anderson had promised to submit the result of the investigation of the effect of die levy on business. IMMIGRATION PROBLEMS. Air Christopher Turner, in a paper which ho read before the Colonial institute on the organisation of migration within the Empire, • says that Australia more than any other Dominion is adapted 3or the group system of settlement. The Imperial Government should create an Imperial policy of migration, and should first bo guided by where population is strategically needed Australia above all other required population. • Air Turner favored settlers owning their farms instead of renting them. Frederick Rothwell Holt, an ex-army officer, who murdered a woman named AH's Kathiecn Elsie Breaks near Blackpool on December 24, has been executed. SPANISH UNREST. MADRID, April 14. . A fracas occurred on Sunday at Alorelas. m Asturias, between the Civil Guard and some Socialist miners. The latter had murdered eight Catholic Socialists and wounded five for resuming work. Fourteen persons were killed and 34 injured.
