CRUELTY TO ANIMALS

The committee of the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals" held their regular meeting yesterday afternoon in Mr E. S. Wilson's office. Sir George Fen wick presided, and others Dresent were Mrs and Miss Porteouß, Rev. M. Diamond, Rev. W. Saunders, Messrs A. Kilpatrick, S. Leith, W. D. Snowball, C. Morris, W. F. Sligo, J. Brown, and P. Briscoe.

A letter was read from Mr L. H. Orbell, now of Winchester, who forwarded his resignation, as he no longer resides in Otago.—The President remarked that Mr Orbell had acted as the society's agent, and had been a very useful membe:'.—Resolved to accept the resignation with regret, and to express the hope that Mr Orbell would transfer ids services to the Canterbury Society.

Mr Peter Barr wrote enclosing a statement as to the steps that had been taken in the direction- of" federating public sub-, scriptims.— The President said it ap-* peared to him that the scheme was not applicable to a 'society such as theirs.— Mr Kilpatrick remarked that if they joined the scheme their inspector would have to stop collecting.—Mr Morris said lie _ thought the scheme was rather for societies that relied on street collections.— Mr Snowball said that this society's collecting was # only of members' fee's.t—Resolved to return thanks for the opportunity to join, but to intimate that the society could not see their way to fall in with the scheme.

• Mr Allan Duncan, assistant inspector, reported that he had visited Winton, Browns, Wallacetown, Woodlands, Grove Bush, Long Bush, Riverton, Kingston, Queenstown, Arrowtown, and Bluff, and had occasion to caution three persons-, one for- beating a horse, two for working lame horses. One complaint that he investi-, gated he considered to be no case.

_ Mr Morris' brought up the question of the inspector (Mr Craig) having"an annual holiday, and it was left to the -president to arrange.
