LEADER OF GALLANT MEN

A TRIBUTE FROM FRANCE.

The following high tribute paid to Majorgeneral Sir A. H. Russell by the French Ministry of War appears in a general order recently issued : Republic of _ France.—Ministry of War. Ministers Office, Paris, November 28. 1919. The President of the Council of the Ministry of War mentions in Army Orders the name of the following. English officer : "Major-general Sir A. H. Russell, X.Z. Division. He has led to countless victories a splendid Division, whose exploits have not been equalled, and whose reputation was such that on the arrival of the Division on the Somme battlefield during the critical days of March, 1918, the departure of the inhabitants was stopped immediately. The Division covered itself with fresh glory during the battles of the Ancre a la Sambre, at Puisieux au Mont, Bapatime, Crevecoeur, and La Quesnoy." For and by the order of the President of the Council of the Ministry of War. Boeker, Colonel, Adjutant-general to the Cabinet.

The regular meeting of the Port Chalmers School Committee was held yesterday evening, the following members being present : Rev. W. M. Grant (chairman), Messrs A. R. Sutherland. R. D. Jack. J. Osborn, D. Asher,an.'l J. M'Lachan. The chairman reported having made further application to the board for the erection of a much needed science room. The rector reported that for the past five weeks the" average -roll in the primary department was 475, and t! average attendance 462. In ths secondary department the average roll was 58, "and the average attendance 37. The attendance in the secondary department is the largest experienced, and entitles the school, if it is maintained, to another teacher. The Visiting Committee reported that the asphalting of the playground is being attended to, and when completed will be a great, boon to the children.
